Documents on Demand
The library’s Documents on Demand office is where Off-Campus Programs and CMU Online students and faculty go to request copies of articles, books, and other materials needed for research. You can request materials from the CMU Libraries collections and from the collections of other libraries as well. If you need a copy of something, Documents on Demand is the place to go.

Is there a cost?
Documents on Demand is funded by CMU and we pay the cost of shipping books and photocopies of articles to you. The only costs you incur are the cost of shipping books back to CMU and overdue fines, if any. Any photocopies or electronic documents you receive are yours to keep.
How long will it take to receive my materials?
Requests for materials are normally processed within 24 - 48 hours of receipt.
- If your material is available in the CMU Library, we will send it as soon as possible.
- If the requested item is not available in the CMU Libraries collection, we will try to get it from another library. If the not needed after date is more than 4 weeks away, we will automatically pursue your request from another source. If the not needed after date is less than 4 weeks, we will contact you to discuss how this option fits into your timeline.
How long is the book loan period?
| Patron Status | Loan Period |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate - Continental U.S. | 30 days |
| Undergraduate - Hawaii | 42 days |
| Undergraduate - Canada/Mexico | 42 days |
| Graduate Student | 60 days |
| Faculty/Staff | 184 days |
Note: Exceptions to these loan periods may apply to some items (e.g., books received through Interlibrary Loan).
