Library Services to Distance Learners:
Is it Time to Recast the Model?

Library services to distance learners have been conceived, delivered and evaluated with the underlying assumption that they 'require library services distinct from those offered to students with ready access to the library building'. Lynn will discuss what the benefits to distance learners might be of a new model.

Biographical information:

Lynn Copeland is Dean of Library Services at Simon Fraser University and was formerly Head of Systems, Data, and Resource Sharing. Copeland was the first Manager of the British Columbia Electronic Library Network and has previously worked at the University of British Columbia, Rutgers, and UC Berkeley. Under Copeland’s leadership, Simon Fraser University Library is noted for its innovative technology and digitization; the Library’s liaison programme and Student Learning Commons, writing and learning support, have been recognized for their role in student and research success.

The award winning reSearcher software suite was developed to provide searching, location identification, online article linking, document requesting, and electronic journal and monograph management. It is used by many western Canadian academic libraries and in the United States, Europe, Africa and India. The software provides significantly improved library services to students and faculty, particularly distance students.

Responsible for technology development for the Public Knowledge Project, a SPARC leading edge partner, Simon Fraser University Library is the British Columbia node in Synergies, the $11 million Canada Foundation for Innovation project to transform scholarly communication in the humanities and social sciences. The Public Knowledge Project software is comprised of the OJS journal management system, the OCS conference management system and the PKP metadata harvester.

Copeland is former Chair of the CARL eLearning Working Group, leads the Multicultural Canada project to digitize resources relating to Canada's ethnic groups and is a member of the Alouette Canada Steering Committee and Canadiana.org board.
